Definition of disaster
DISASTER Disaster is derived from two words, 'dis' meaning bad and 'aster' meaning star referring to a calamitous event that occurs suddenly and causes great damage, hardship or even loss of life. It can also be defined as an unforeseen and sudden event that causes great damage, destruction and human suffering. A disaster is also defined as a situation where widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses have occurred that exceed the ability of the affected organization, community or society to respond and recover with its own resources.
